about

BONES is instrumental music for a fretless 3 string cigar box guitar, composed in 72et (Equal Temperament). 72et consists of 72 notes per octave, 6 notes per half step. 72et gives you the ability to tune minor and major thirds, sixths, sevenths, seconds and tritones to just intonation. They are not all exact as just but close enough to put melodies and chords in tune. 72et keeps the standard 12 equal temperament notes, so it's easy to learn and adjust notes accordingly. The notation, developed by Ezra Simms, is simple.

Whether I'm playing fretless or fretted, I always adjust my slide notes or chords with 72et. To explain further, each half step is 100c (cents), with 1200c to the octave. So, for slide guitar, each fret is 100c. The main ones to adjust are the thirds, sixths and sevenths. Minor 3rd, minor 6th & minor 7th up 16c. Major 3rd, major 6th & major 7th down 16c. Minor 2nd up 16c. Major 2nd down 16c. Augmentend 4th down 16c. Diminished 5th up 33c.

The two different tritones are like being in 1/4 comma Meantone tuning. Meantone tuning is where our Western notation and theory comes from. In Meantone tuning sharps and flats were two distinct notes. So, for a G minor chord, you would choose Bb and for an F# major chord, you would choose A# in order to be in tune. For an E blues scale, A# down 16c and Bb up 33c can be used accordingly.

My 3 string CBG is tuned to my son's favorite tuning, DAD, bottom three strings of a guitar. A is at 432hz, about a 1/4 tone flatter than 440hz. The music and recording is minimalist in nature, hence the title BONES. Microtones shouldn't make your stomach turn. The beauty of using them is to be more harmonious. Yes, you can create new melodies and chords but there is only one major 3rd in nature and that sounds in tune. The rest simply aren't. In order to move forward, we must not forget harmony and the rules of nature. Last but not least, it's our strive for perfection, not perfection itself that is beautiful. I hope you enjoy this recording as much as I did making it.
